Top 5 Reasons You Are Not Making Money From Your Blog

Are you worried about making money from your blog despite of serious efforts on it? Are you already pissed off seeing other bloggers flashing ads on their sites and you believe that they have surpassed you?

All the blogging efforts we practiced 2 years ago are no more working, let me alert you. All the old techniques of SEO and driving traffic have gone ineffective and many bloggers have left blogging completely.

WAIT!!! I am not here to discourage you. In fact, I am writing this article for those who do not want to leave blogging and are serious to learn more what to do? If your brain is hungry to get new updates, read this further, else close this tab…..

Are you still here?? Great!! So you want it make money blogging and are motivated-Here is why you have not reached your first milestone yet:

You Have a Pathetic Blog Design

They say that ‘Content is the King’ and it is true, however, to a certain extent. There is one element that is ‘The Queen’ as I love saying it like this. Yes, if the queen is not happy, King would be inefficient too. The Queen is your pretty website design. Your website needs to be beautiful and attractive at any cost.

Think this way, if you visit a website that is not presentable and does not soothe your eyes, will you ever read on further? Very often, we do leave such websites instantly, unless we are not a webmaster looking on what others have put on their website as content. So, if the design is not good, there is no use of even the best of content in industry.

Hundreds of resources are available to fix your design problems.

Your Site Lacks Ideal Navigation

Navigation may be considered as a part of your website design; however, this is one of the independent attributes of your website. A website is a series of pages linked together and this often leads to difficulty in navigation process for the user. If your visitors find it difficult to get around your website, how will they become regular visitors on your site?

I wonder why people do not take the advantage of the full navigation with ideal drop-down options available in Worpress. Create easy navigation for your popular pages. Create drop down for tags and categories.

Make sure there is a clear ‘Home’ button that is clickable. I simply mean make it easy for your reader to get anywhere on the site from any page.

You are Making it Difficult to Pay

Selling has proven to be the most effective way to make money blogging. As I have already talked about making money through affiliate marketing, the ‘how-to’ alone is not going to help. You will have to make it easy for your readers to pay on your blog. You need to maintain the balance of information your blog provides along with the products to entice them to buy.

At the same time, it is important to make it convenient for the user to pay online in least number of steps. Offering multiple options to pay works well too.

Your Site is Created to Rank on Google

Gone are the days when ranking on Google was the sole objective of a site or blog. In recent years, Google has made it too difficult for the websites to rank in top searches. So, it will be a problem if you have created a blog just for the sake of ranking and think you can earn by making it visible on first and second page.

You may not have realized that this will lead to penalization of your site if not yet. Your objective should be to deliver the best for your visitors and follow Google guidelines. Though it will take some time, but your site will earn credibility and repute in the eyes of Google risk-free.

You Do Not Show yourself

People know your blog, they love your writing style and hence they follow it. However, they will not act or spend money on your blog, if they do not know you or they have not seen your face. You need to be visible in front of your readers to gather that faith. So, do not hide your face and let them know the person behind the information on your blog. You can increase your visibility in the following ways:

  • Leave a space for a headshot in your design
  • Create an About Us page and tell your story
  • Make your email address easily available on site
  • Link your site to all your social profiles

If you are missing on any of these postulates, your chances of earning money from your blog weakens.

Go ahead and rectify your pitfalls. Good Luck!!

  1. Hi Jitendra,
These are all very good points. Another issue that I see a lot is an unorganized effort. If you don’t really have a strong plan or if you jump around from one approach to another very quickly it is hard to have sustained success and make money.

  2. Hi Jitendra,

One line you wrote at the very start caught my attention. When you said- ‘blogging efforts we practices 2 years ago are no more working and are useless’, I was like ‘Yes, that makes perfect sense’. That’s why I consider it safe to say that to monetize a blog, one must be willing to evolve, learn new things, cope up with the change! 🙂

About the design of the blog part, I agree with you that it plays a role in deciding the monetization aspects. I have my own experience to share regarding it. I used to churn out good quality posts on an education based blog of mine. One fine day, I decided to change the design of the blog and bought a premium theme. That moment changed my fortunes. After getting a new look and layout that was professional, I landed couple of sponsored article offers from educational institutes! 🙂

And one more thing that worked in my case is ‘showing yourself up part’. In a bid to boost affiliate sales, I used to let potential buyers add me up as friend on Facebook. 🙂 When they got to see and interact with ‘me’, the person, on Facebook, the sales increased magically! 🙂

Nice write up bro! I came to this post via Kingged.com. I’ll definitely Kingg it there!

  5. Many blogs are not making money today because the owners are concentrating on “making money” instead of creating value for readers.

The audience will only reward a blog that helps them solve “problems”. Every visitor accesses a blog for information, product, or advise, so a blogger must not forget these basic principles.

Yes, most bloggers get it all wrong through wrong blog design, poor check out page, poor navigation links, and discouraging contents.

  6. Hi Jitendra,

I like that this post was direct.

I agree with the points starting with the first one. When I go to a site and it is cluttered with small print, it’s not good. I think if someone comes to your site it does need to be “pretty”.

I like simple. So, I agree with the navigation buttons. WordPress makes it simple and a good theme makes it simple. I use Genesis, so I get two different lines of navigation buttons. I love it.

I also like the part of showing yourself. Yes I do. I like to see pictures of people. I think it helps us relate to each.

  7. Sunday’s take is correct. That is one reason, especially to newbies that who ought to have a blogging page that makes money. They often fail to remember to mull over selling something, like products and services or simply helping other people first. If you do not understand what blogging really is, you can produce a dollar in your pillar.

I left this comment on kingged.com, the content curation website and blogging community.

  8. I have just read an article recently that discussed why your blog might fail. One of the reasons is because you focus on earning money instead of creating quality and valuable posts for your readers, that is (according to the article I’ve read) not really effective, especially when you’re just starting your website.
I just want to share this matter, hoping that it contributes in this article.

I agree with all your points, Jitendra. All these reasons are true enough to explain why you’re not making money from your blog.
