What is VMware?

VMware Server is a software system that allows users to create and run multiple virtual computers on one physical piece of hardware. The product provides an entire virtual machine (VM) operating environment for each instance of the software, including the OS, memory and CPU resources.

VMware Server is available as a free download from VMware Inc. This system has been available since 2004. Server virtualization allows multiple OSes to run on one physical server, regardless of the underlying hardware.

In a typical setup, each virtual machine (VM) has its own copy of the guest OS and acts like an isolated computer while still running on top of the same host system. The one physical server provides all the resources for each virtual machine. Server dependency is not an issue, since all VMs depend on the host OS beneath them.

Each instance of VMware Server can run multiple OSes simultaneously, even Windows and other OSes that don’t normally work together. Each VM has full access to the host system’s hardware, RAM and CPUs.

Virtualization allows more efficient use of computer resources since VMs share the same physical system instead of running on separate machines.

Top 4 VMware Alternatives

1. Citrix Hypervisor

Citrix Hypervisor

Citrix Hypervisor is an industry-leading, open-source platform for cost-effective desktop, server, and cloud virtualization infrastructures. Citrix Hypervisor enables organizations of any size or type to consolidate and transform compute resources into virtual workloads for today’s data center requirements.

It provides a “bare-metal” hypervisor that runs directly on the server hardware, enabling you to pool and allocate CPU, storage, memory, and networking resources to your virtual machines (VMs).

Citrix Hypervisor is designed to run directly on the server hardware, which enables you to pool and allocate CPU, storage, memory, and networking resources to VMs. Citrix Hypervisor offers a “bare metal” solution that avoids the overhead of other hypervisors that use a software layer between the guest VM and the host hardware.

2. KVM

kvm

KVM is an open-source virtualization technology for Linux on x86 hardware containing virtualization extensions (Intel VT or AMD-V).

It features dynamic memory, which means no more shared storage between hypervisors. It also allows you to simply use PCI devices in a guest system, use PCI passthrough (aka. P2V) to pass through your NIC, graphic card, or any other PCI device directly to your VM without the need of an emulated device.

KVM allows you to share physical Ethernet ports with multiple instances of virtual machines using internal/external switch tools like ovs-vswitch or keepalived.

KVM creates a safe and isolated environment for guest operating systems using the second mode which filters system calls using an external kernel patch or by compiling KVM itself with this patch.

KVM allows you to run 32-bits and 64-bits guest os in the emulated hardware, it also supports different Operating Systems like Linux, FreeBSD, Windows.

3. Azure Virtual Machines

Azure Virtual Machines

Azure Virtual Machines gives you the flexibility of virtualization for a wide range of computing solutions: development and testing, running applications, and extending your datacenter with support for Linux, Windows Server, SQL Server, Oracle, IBM, and SAP.

We recently announced several enhancements to further extend its capabilities including more powerful VMs (Standard_D32_v3 and D64_v2), new VM series (M-Series/B-Series), a larger number of storage accounts, an improved management portal, improved network performance across regions, and a cross-premises extension for seamless connectivity to on-premise resources.

Microsoft Azure concentrates on the development, deploying, and managing of applications in its cloud. It offers PaaS, IaaS, and SaaS solutions for all major operating systems, programming languages, frameworks, and tools.

Azure Virtual Machines can be used to build test environments for applications deployed within an organization’s data center or other hosting services. You can also use virtual machines to develop and test new applications before you deploy them in your data center, allowing the same development and test environment to be used for both purposes.

4. Red Hat Virtualization

Red Hat Virtualization

Red Hat Virtualization is an open-source virtualization platform that runs on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It allows you to create and manage virtual machines (instances of operating systems or applications, called guests).

Many different types of resources can be allocated to each guest including storage space, the number of CPUs, and a number of memory.

RHV is now included as part of Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscriptions, so you can download RHV from the Customer Portal. This includes access to full documentation and knowledge base articles and a free 90-day evaluation license (trial) that will allow you to run your hosts with up to 12 physical CPUs (see how you can upgrade your license ).

They also provide RHV as part of the Red Hat Cloud Infrastructure subscription for customers with dedicated infrastructure.
