Looking for an unbiased World Nomads Travel Insurance Review 2023 don’t Worry, I got you covered.
Do you have travel insurance? This overview should not be construed as an offer to buy insurance; all coverage, including benefit limits, is subject to terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions, and depends on the country of residence of the reader.
Even though I’ve written about travel insurance in the past, I’ve never taken the time to give World Nomads the proper assessment it deserves despite the fact that I’ve used them as my primary travel insurance provider for many years.
They were the very first organization I ever utilized, and I have continued to make use of their services all through the years, regardless of where my travels have taken me. As a result of the numerous inquiries I receive on them, I have decided to provide you with a review of World Nomads Travel Insurance today.

What’s included in World Nomads Insurance Policies?
Here’s a general overview of what World Nomads covers. Please note that specific coverage varies per policy and depends on where you’re from and where you’re going. Be careful to read all of the information about a policy before enrolling.
- Medical Coverage
World Nomads offers coverage of up to $100,000 USD, while its more expensive insurance will cover you for more.
If you’re doing extremely insane things that could result in significant injury, having a lot of coverage limitations is vital. Alternatively, if you become extremely ill. (However, I find that $100,000 in coverage is more than plenty for my needs.)
Its insurance also covers medical expenses as well as those associated with medical evacuation or repatriation if you are wounded in an accident. For example, if you break your leg while hiking in the woods, your coverage should cover your transportation to the hospital, which World Nomads does.
You may even be deported back to your native country if the situation merits it (not every injury or emergency will warrant this, however).
- Emergency Dental Treatment
World Nomads also covers emergency dental treatment in the event of an accident while on the road. This can include things like an unanticipated infection, a fractured tooth, or an accident that causes you to injure your mouth or jaw. It excludes any optional dental procedures, such as exams and cleanings (or things that can wait until you get back home).
- Non-medical Emergency Evacuation
In the event of civil or political upheaval in the country you’re visiting, World Nomads also provides transportation coverage. This holds true in the event of a natural calamity or being expelled from a country. NOTE: If you’re a US citizen, you’re not insured in all states. You’ll need to double-check your policy for details.
- Accidental Death And Dismemberment Insurance
Your World Nomads plan pays a lump sum to your beneficiary, such as a family member, if the worst happens. This insurance also covers you if you lose your eyesight, a hand, foot, or leg, among other things, while on vacation. Furthermore, they pay for the cost of your body’s repatriation (i.e., sending your body home).
- Lost Or Stolen Goods
This coverage reimburses you for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage and personal goods during your vacation. If your baggage is delayed for more than a particular amount of time, such as 12 hours, some policies can pay you for additional charges.
- Trip Cancellation, Interruption, Or Delay
Trip cancellation insurance reimburses you for prepaid expenses if your tour operator goes out of business if you or a family member becomes sick or wounded, if there is a death in the family, terrible weather, or a natural disaster, or if your tour operator goes out of business.
Trip interruption insurance protects you if you have to cancel your holiday due to illness or injury, or if you need to return home owing to a death in the family (it has to be your immediate family, however).
Trip delay coverage reimburses you for expenditures incurred if you are delayed while traveling, such as when a flight is canceled due to severe weather.
Additional expenses are covered on a one-time basis if you are delayed for six hours or more on route to or from your trip owing to a designated hazard (as explained in the policy). All three are covered in World Nomads!
- One Call: 24-hour Assistance Services
In the event of a medical emergency, World Nomads also has a 24-hour service that provides assistance, guidance, and referrals. The program will assist you in finding nearby doctors, dentists, and medical facilities.
They can also arrange and pay for appropriate transportation to a suitable hospital, treatment center, or home, including an escort if necessary. When traveling, have this number on your phone so it’s easy to find if you need it.
What Activities Are Covered?
Not all activities are covered under every plan so make sure you’re covered before heading off on your adventure. Here are some of the activities the World Nomads covers:
- Ice skating
- Scuba diving
- Bungee jumping
- Hang gliding
- Zip Lining
- Camel Riding
- Mountain biking
- Farm work
- Fruit picking
- Office work
What is not covered by World Nomads?
Every insurance policy in the world has its set of terms and conditions. The same goes for World Nomads Travel Insurance. In the unlikely event of some specific mishaps or recklessness, you probably won’t be covered under their insurance. Here’s a list:
- Accidents result from extreme adventure sports such as hang gliding, paragliding, or bungee jumping (unless you pay extra).
- Incidents involving alcohol or drugs.
- Carelessness with your belongings and luggage.
- If the problem occurred as a result of your irresponsible behavior (how “reckless” is defined is left to the company), you will not be paid.
- Pre-existing conditions or routine examinations If you have diabetes and need additional insulin, for example, you will not be covered. You’re also not covered if you want to see a doctor for a general checkup.
- Cash that has been lost or stolen
- If you leave something unattended, your theft coverage will not cover you.
- You’re definitely out of luck as well if civil upheaval makes your destination insecure but your government hasn’t ordered an evacuation.
- Flight upgrades unless medically necessary
- Refusal to return home for essential medical care
- Injuries or illnesses related to drug or alcohol use
- Needlessly risky behavior
- Riding a motorcycle without a helmet and the proper license
- Forgotten bags or gear
- Theft without a written police report
- Excluded pre-existing medical conditions
- Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Death from suicide
- Financial loss from stolen credit cards
- Not following the advice of local authorities after a natural disaster
- Forgetting your passport
- A confiscated passport
- A replacement passport
- Major dental work
- Routine dental work

Wrapping up: World Nomads Travel Insurance Review
World Nomads is a travel insurance company that provides policies for traveling to various destinations that cover a variety of situations, including emergency medical care, a stolen passport, missing luggage, natural disasters, or a terrorist attack.
They’re also available 24/7 to help you in the event of an emergency, whether you need transportation to a medical facility or emergency evacuation.
Different travelers have different needs. For example, a retiree has different concerns than a family with young children. World Nomads seems aimed at a particular type of traveler – a younger adventurer with the freedom to explore the world.
World Nomads Travel Insurance, we believe, might be quite valuable for a small group of adventure travelers. It may be pricey for most travelers who do not require such protection.

MASSIVE LOOPHOLE WARNING
Conditions that are “similar”, but unrelated to, a condition that was subject to a previous claim ARE NOT COVERED. Here is an example, in World Nomads’ own words:
“If you were to develop a new stomach condition not related to the previous stomach issue but a similar condition you would not be covered due to it would be considered pre-existing unless it was due to an injury or something totally unrelated.”
I would be happy to share their emails to me for posting on this site.
This is a shocking and appalling loophole, especially for a policy that is marketed towards long term travellers, who are likely to get separate but “similar conditions” – such as stomach issues, the most common travelers’ ailment. This company is unethical and anyone who promotes it without mentioning this loophole is irresponsible (though this is not explicitly mentioned in the policy, so it is likely most people don’t know about it).
World Nomads will not provide any further details on how they define a “similar condition”, so you don’t even know what you are covered for. I have confirmed this loophole multiple times, so I know it wasn’t just one agent giving incorrect information.
Looking for a policy that won’t break the bank, but still covers you in case of an accident? I’ve been globe-trotting with world nomads for 4 years now and have never had to file a claim. If it’s time for you to go explore the world, why not let us provide your insurance coverage so we can continue our explorations together!f
The best thing about world nomads is the whole experience is how user-friendly world nomads makes their website—easy navigation, clear information on what you are buying, timeline charts telling you where your policy stands in relation to medical events during travel, easy input screens making it easy for me to fill out relevant data all while feeling safe knowing I have coverage should anything go wrong.
World nomads is the perfect insurance for any adventurer or weekend warrior. When I first left my home without a plan, I thought of safety as mostly physical safety. Lost baggage, lost passport, possibly being run over by a bus? These are all things that have happened to me before on city streets and at city airports around the world. Exploring the unknown is an emotional thing! But now with world nomads it’s not just about my physical safety, now they make sure my travels are financially secure too.
A traveler can’t live without this world. With World Nomads, your destination matters less than how you get there. That means it doesn’t matter if you’re surfing on the coast of Peru or skiing in Switzerland; we’ve got insurance for every adventure.
Security and convenience that doesn’t disrupt your vacation – I would never want to lose my sense of security during a vacation, especially not on a solo trip. World nomads has been the perfect solution for me. When you purchase this cover, you get all the advantages of travel without any of the stressors or breaches in safety. It’s low cost protection for everyone!
If you’re an adventurous soul who loves to travel and discover new places, then you’ll need a quality insurance plan. World Nomads Travel is a comprehensive travel insurance company that has been around for many years. All of their products are broken down into four levels, which range from basic to cover against medical expenses only up to the ultimate best-buy protection that covers everything – except for pre-existing illness or injury.
I’ve tested World Nomads Travel on four different trips. I usually buy travel insurance but this was my first claim on a policy that I had purchased. The process was straight forward, fair, and the customer service response time wasn’t too long considering. There are few sights in life you want to buy insurance for until they happen to you–which is why it’s always better to be safe than sorry with world nomads!
You never hope for disaster to strike, but when it comes knocking you always want to be prepared. That’s why I’ve bought world nomads travel insurance before every trip I’ve taken. It only took one airline mechanical issue and 8 hours on a runway in Bangkok with 500+ cranky travelers as evidence of me needing this peace of mind.
