At the Affiliate World Asia 2025 conference, Jitendra Vaswani sat down with Annie Ma, Social Media Manager at ODYS, to discuss her personal and professional journey.
In this open and heartfelt conversation, Annie shares the experiences that shaped her into the person she is today. Through her struggles and growth, Annie provides valuable insights into both SEO and life itself.
👇 Key Life Lessons and Personal Struggles
Annie begins the interview with an emotional reflection on the loss of her father. She recounts how his death, due to alcoholism, affected her deeply.
Growing up with a father who couldn’t open up about his struggles left Annie with a strong sense of resilience. It became her driving force, shaping her belief in never letting pain define her.
“Losing him was the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through. But it made me who I am today. I’m determined to turn that pain into strength.”
She also opens up about her past mistakes—admitting to being a “toxic” person in her previous relationships. Annie is incredibly honest about her mistakes, showing how her experiences have shaped her into a better, more self-aware individual.
It’s a raw reminder that self-realization is often the hardest but most necessary part of growth.
Embracing the SEO Community
Annie shares the pivotal moment when she entered the SEO community, recalling how an SEO mastery summit in Saigon, Vietnam changed everything.
She found an environment that allowed her to embrace her eccentric side, something she had never felt comfortable doing in the corporate world.
“The SEO community helped me accept that being different isn’t a bad thing. It’s what makes you stand out.”
She also highlights the authenticity of the SEO world, where people value being real, something she had longed for in previous work environments.
Love, Money, and Independence
The topic of love and money comes up, and Annie has strong views. She shares how, growing up, her parents struggled financially, even though they loved each other deeply.
Annie stresses that financial independence is especially important for women, having seen firsthand how money struggles led to tension and conflict in her family.
“I’ve learned that you need both—love and financial stability. One doesn’t work without the other.”
She believes that having financial independence is key to feeling empowered, especially in a relationship. She also emphasizes the importance of self-love, which she views as the foundation for any healthy relationship.
Managing Stress and Relationships
Annie admits that in the past, she didn’t handle stress well. However, she’s since found peace in practices like meditation, which help her calm her emotions during challenging moments. She also talks about the importance of personal space in relationships. Taking time to step back during arguments has become a valuable tool in her marriage.
“I used to lash out when stressed. Now, I take a moment, breathe, and give myself the space to think before reacting.”
Confronting a Toxic Past and Growth
Opening up about her toxic past, Annie confesses that she cheated in previous relationships—not out of unhappiness, but because she didn’t have the courage to leave.
It’s one of the toughest admissions she makes in the interview. However, her self-reflection and growth are apparent as she explains how she now sets strong boundaries and treats relationships with more empathy.
“I’ve learned that walking away is far better than hurting someone. I’m proud of how much I’ve changed.”
Imposter Syndrome and Learning Humility
In the world of SEO, Annie admits to struggling with imposter syndrome. At SEO conferences, she often felt like she wasn’t “smart enough.”
However, over time, she realized that humility—asking questions, being open to learning—is more important than pretending to know everything. She now values growth over perfection.
“It’s okay to ask questions and admit you don’t know everything. That’s how you learn and grow.”
Family Dynamics and Childhood Trauma
Annie is transparent about the strained relationships with her family, especially with her mother. The cultural pressures placed on her, particularly the expectations around financial support, created tension.
She also talks about the physical abuse she suffered as a child, which left deep trust issues and a fear of closeness.
“It’s been hard, but I’ve learned that forgiveness is the first step toward healing.”
Forgiveness and Heroes
In a touching moment, Annie discusses forgiving her grandmother, recognizing that her actions were shaped by her own past trauma. She also speaks about her father, whom she admires deeply. Despite his struggles, she sees him as her hero.
“My father was my hero. He may have had flaws, but his quiet dedication as a provider will always stay with me.”
Life’s Highs, Lows, and Future Vision
Looking toward the future, Annie reflects on 2025 being both the best and worst year of her life. On the positive side, she had the opportunity to travel to incredible places through ODYS Global.
On the flip side, she faced humbling realizations about her own limitations. As she plans for the future, Annie has big goals: she wants to build a multi-million dollar business and, eventually, a $100 million business to help others and provide access to opportunities for the less fortunate.
“I’ve learned that success isn’t just about money—it’s about giving back and providing opportunities to those who don’t have them.”
