Google confirmed a broad core update on February 1, 2026, and early signals indicate it is one of the most meaningful updates in recent years.

The rollout is clearly doing two things: cracking down on thin, low-value AI-generated content and rewarding sites that demonstrate genuine topical authority.

The update introduces what experts call Information Gain scoring, which measures how much new information a document provides beyond what is already available online.

The traditional skyscraper content strategy, which involved creating longer versions of existing top-ranking content, no longer works because the algorithm now determines the degree of similarity between competitive pieces.

Crawl Efficiency and Technical SEO Priorities

Google recently noted that 75 percent of crawling inefficiencies come from faceted navigation and filtered URLs, including product filters creating endless URL variations and sort parameters that add no unique value.

These pages consume crawl budget without ranking or converting. During the core update rollout, sites that rewrote large sections of content, deleted pages en masse, or made aggressive structural changes mid-rollout historically struggled to recover.
