Google’s teams identified benchmark results in coding and software engineering tasks that fell below the internal bar they had set for a Pro-tier model, and rather than ship a model that underperformed its predecessor on a commercially critical category, they pulled it back for further work.
The full rebuild — which is reportedly what triggered the July 17 internal target — was intended to address these coding capability gaps without regressing on the model’s strong performance in other areas including reasoning, multimodal understanding, and long-context handling.
The 2-million-token context window that has been widely reported as a Gemini 3.5 Pro specification has not been officially confirmed by Google, and Business Insider reported that pricing and API structure for the model also remain unconfirmed.
