3. Bright

Bright is a new open source tool that utilizes Tor’s control port to provide access to a remote C&C server. This is done through a series of automated protocols, including IP priming and cookie management, automatic retries for failed requests, automatic HTTP protocol updates and TLS/SSL fingerprint rotation, and header management based on target site requirements.

Talos has been using Bright extensively both as part of our research into the Nemucod malware family and during routine work targeting C&C servers found via exploit kit campaigns. In either case, it provides us with an easy way to interact with sites that otherwise require significant effort on our part.

Bright exposes some very simple Python APIs which we use heavily in our custom scripts and tools. These APIs can be used to create HTTP requests to the C&C server, including raw HTTP POSTs, file uploads, and GET requests with full URL path argument parsing. Bright also provides access to a built-in Python command shell which lets you run system commands as well as pre-built binaries such as Mimikatz (which we use for credential dumping) and tcpdump (for packet capture).

The code is written in Python 2.7 and has been tested on Linux, Windows 7/10, and OS X. It requires the third-party modules Requests ( pip install requests ) and SocketServer , which are not included in Bright’s source distribution since they’re hosted on PyPI .

Bright uses a custom configuration file format to store C&C server details for each target site. The master branch includes a sample configuration file containing two different URLs for analytical purposes only.

* bright.connect() : initialize a connection to an IP/domain address and optional username/password credentials. This method will return a tuple of ( address , authkey ).

* bright.CmdShell(cmd) : run cmd in the system shell and wait for it to complete, returning its output as a string. * bright.download(url,localname) : download a file from the C&C server at url with optional local filename localname, returning its contents as bytes object. * bright.HTTPRequest(method, path, headers=None) : make an HTTP request using GET or POST where is one of ‘GET’,’PUT’,’POST’. path is the full URL path including arguments, headers is a dictionary of additional HTTP headers to include in this request.

* bright.is_online() : boolean indicating whether or not Bright has successfully established an IP connection. * bright.kill(address) : terminate any process listening on address, returning string command output. * bright.login(username, password) : send username/password credentials to the C&C server and return ( tuple of (bool success , data )).

* bright.SocketServer(domain=’localhost’, port=80) : instantiate a SocketServer server bound to domain:port, which you can use for simple TCP clients or proxies if desired.
