Cloud Hosting is Already The Next Big Thing

Over a decade has passed without any big innovation and improvement in the web hosting industry. At the same time, communication and business online are increasing very quickly. Something has to change to guarantee the security and stability of the cloud as the whole world already depends on it.

Hardware is so cheap now and we are getting into an era of software. The software will lead the world and the software will control everything automatically without human intervention.

After decades of using traditional servers where downtime is something that just happens, the world switches to new technology and a new way of working online and storing data. That new technology brings tones of benefits and resolves the biggest problems coming with the use of traditional dedicated servers. It allows businesses to have higher efficiency, pay less, get more and grow much easier than ever before.

Cloud VPS Hosting Increases Security

It is well-known that most of the websites today use shared web hosting services which is actually a huge part of the security troubles people face. No matter what efforts are being made to make shared hosting secure systems, administrators know that it is an impossible mission because of how shared hosting is designed to work. It is really simple. You can’t demand high security if you share a server with hundreds of other websites. Why?

  • You can’t control other websites hosted on your server. They can get hacked and cause problems.
  • When a website is compromised on shared server hackers usually use it to attack locally other websites. Everyone knows that it is much easier to hack a server when you have local access.
  • Shared hosting means all resources and responsibilities are shared among all users on the server. Others are responsible for the security of your server and you can’t control that.

A Cloud VPS is Cheaper & More Reliable

Traditional web hosting is quickly losing its market share because cloud hosting gives people so much more at a lower price. At the same time that usually comes with increased reliability and high availability too.

If set up correctly, the cloud will bring you the following benefits.

  • Pay as much as you use – you don’t have to pay for unused server space and CPU power anymore. You can order what you need and pay for what you use.
  • Upgrade/downgrade anytime – a cloud VPS will allow you to add and remove disk space, CPU, RAM whenever you want and in some cases without downtime. A traditional dedicated server has to be manually upgraded and you are limited to adding whole parts. If you want more space on the cloud you can just add 50GB more. If you have a traditional server you need to pay for a new drive which will cost a lot more and you will be paying for space you don’t use.
  • Get up and running in seconds – the cloud technology allows hosting providers to provision new servers in seconds and everything is automatic. Your server is online and ready for use before you have a chance to read the welcome email with the login details.
  • High availability – cloud servers live in huge clusters which consist of multiple physical machines. The storage is central with multiple storage nodes and multiple data copies. Everything in the cloud is redundant and there is no single point of failure. Even if a whole physical machine fails, your cloud VPS will be instantly migrated to another healthy machine in the cluster.

Managed or Self-Managed Cloud VPS

The cloud hosting market is growing rapidly due to the increasing migrations from traditional servers to the cloud. The biggest hosting providers have switched to cloud environments years ago. If you are in a position of switching or upgrading from shared hosting to a cloud VPS, managed or self-managed server is for sure one of the questions in front. It is not a hard question to answer though. Most of the hosting companies can provide managed services at an additional cost and some even include it for free when you order a control panel such as cPanel or Plesk.

If you have an experience with managing Linux servers the answer is clear. Your best option is to find a self-managed server and pay less because you will take care of the system administration. Self-managed Cloud VPS hosting is really cheap. You can get a server for $5 per month if you don’t need a control panel software but if you need a control panel, backups and management the price starts to increase. Only the control panel license will cost you about $15 per month. Add backups, management and the cost of the server to get to the next big problem in front of website owners who want to succeed online but lack the budget.

Managed Cloud VPS Hosting Is Not Cheap

Every business owner with a website has this dilemma. Is it worth switching from the cheap shared hosting plan to my own cloud VPS?

The answer of that question can be provided quickly by answering the following one: Is your success online worth $12 per month? (that’s how much the cheapest managed cloud VPS would cost). For sure it will be more expensive than your $5/mo shared hosting plan but it is worth spending a little more to get the extra security and reliability which will differentiate your business from your competitors using shared hosting.

Your cloud VPS cost will of course depend on the disk space, CPU, RAM, management you will need. The price may vary from $5 to some hundreds of $$. If you are starting up your online business and your website is not too popular and does not require too much space, security will come at a pretty low price even with management and backups included. Adding extras such as more backup recovery points, 24/7 monitoring or professional anti-spam protection will also increase your monthly cost but it will also bring you the benefits you will need to succeed.

Why is Managed Cloud VPS Hosting Expensive?

There are multiple factors that are important to mention here. The list of expenses is the first to mention as it increases the total cost of the service.

  • Cloud VPS hosting requires dedicated resources – the hosting provider has to dedicate CPU, RAM, disk space to the VPS of the customer unlike in shared hosting environment where everything is shared and a very small portion of the websites will always utilise 100% of their assigned resources.
  • Building and managing a cloud cluster is not cheap – cloud clusters require experienced systems administrators to build, configure and manage them to operate efficiently and to result in high uptime and quality service. Such people are expensive to have. Building a redundant cluster without a single point of failure also requires a huge initial investment.
  • Licenses are expensive – managed cloud VPS hosting services require lots of software to run. All that software is not free and costs extra in licensing. Licenses is actually the biggest cost for the provider to deliver a managed cloud VPS to the customer. I have made a list with software that is installed and how much it costs the hosting provider.
  • Control panel – $15 per month
  • Backup software – $7 per month
  • 1-Click installer – $1 per month

That is a total of $23 per month without the expenses for hardware and management. When you compare all that to a shared hosting plan which costs $5 per month the decision becomes harder and security & uptime become more expensive. Depending on how popular the website is and how much in sales it makes per hour the cost of downtime and security may reach thousands per hour.

What to Avoid and Some Free Advice

Before placing an order always communicate with a live person representing the company in case you decide to choose a different company from the trusted ones above. If you have a bad feeling listen to it and look for another company. There are many which can provide what you are looking for although the great ones are not really too many.

Visit their page on Facebook and make sure they didn’t hide the reviews of their customers. If they did that means the company has something to hide and it is very likely that their customers are not happy with the provided services.

Some companies try to get you in a long-term deal to give you a lower price. Try to find one on a month to month basis at an affordable price which you can easily migrate from in case you are not happy at some point. Avoid paying for longer periods than 3 months unless you are 100% sure that’s the company you want to work with and you are sure you will not get disappointed.

Make sure to ask about storage and ensure it’s SSD. Ask about high availability and ensure your VPS will not be down for more than 10 minutes in case of hardware failure with a physical server. Ensure there is no single point of failure in the cloud infrastructure of your provider by asking them. Talk to their support and see if they are friendly and always available. Test them at different times of the day.

Conclusion: List Of Best Cloud VPS Hosting 2023

The Cloud VPS hosting market is growing and the competition is huge. That is only good for customers because it results in lower prices, more features and quality improvements at the same or lower cost. If you are looking for a flexible and reliable Cloud VPS Hosting then you should go with Siteground and GoDaddy as they are the best options available out there. And if you want to spend some more on quality Cloud VPS Hosting then you should go with Liquid Web.

Traditional VPS hosting and traditional servers, in general are dying. Small business owners get cloud VPS plans with fewer resources, middle size businesses use one or multiple cloud VPS services with more resources and the enterprise business builds hybrid or private cloud infrastructures. The target of all of them is one and the same – to get higher security and uptime, better efficiency and easier management at a lower price.

  1. Site Ground and Liquid Web may be the only acceptable VPS providers you have listed. Rest of them are “popular” (in their own weird way) but should not be there – pages have been written on the reasons.

Cloud hosting shares underlying resources and the main benefit is supposed to be taking away a single point of failure, which is, the server hardware. Typical VPS / dedicated servers are on the same hardware, which can lead to downtimes if not managed ‘properly’. Technically they can share hardware too, but those kind of setups are hard to maintain because of costs.

Respected VPS providers (managed or unmanaged) have a good backup/recovery system (that actually gets tested). There is a degree of virtualization in place and it should be a fairly quick recovery unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Licenses may not play a big role in the costs – do you have a reference for that statement? Either licenses are baked in the plan, or you bring your own (BYOL). The underlying virtualization system may not add a lot to the costs for a typical, non-enterprisey host.

If one believes that they have a genuine case for cloud hosting, one must consider fully managed app hosting providers (e.g. plans with Siteground, etc for WordPress, providers like Acquia for Drupal). If they can afford to get one level down, the options explode with PaaS (e.g. Heroku) and IaaS providers (AWS, Google Cloud).

every one is sharing information, that’s really good, keep up writing.
