Lingodeer vs Duolingo 2024: Which Is Most Popular Language Learning Tool?- The Battle for Language Mastery

if you’re looking to pick up a new language, plenty of options are at your fingertips.

Apps like Duolingo and Lingodeer are among the most popular language learning tools available today, providing users with vast resources to learn languages from all over the world in an intuitive format.

But how do they compare?

In this post, we’ll go head-to-head in a battle Lingodeer vs Duolingo to determine which is the ultimate champ when it comes to mastering a new language!

Lingodeer vs Duolingo

🚀 Bottom Line Upfront:

Lingodeer focuses on teaching grammar and vocabulary through contextualized phrases, while Duolingo emphasizes sentence structure and building fluency through repetition.

It all comes down to personal preference, as each app has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Whether you’re looking to learn a new language for travel or just for fun, Lingodeer and Duolingo are two excellent options to consider.

Lingodeer Overview

Lingodeer divides their lessons into different topics such as family, numbers, food, or health. There are lots of words you can click on to hear the pronunciation.

This language learning app pays lots of focus on pronunciation by teaching how to make a sound, explanations, and gives exceptions.

Lingodeer helps a lot with teaching pronunciation than Duolingo.

It is very important to learn the pronunciation of words or else there’s no point in learning a language to read and write.

To be able to speak, Lingodeer makes it easy for you language learners. The content differs from language and to language which is again a plus point because it isn’t repetitive at all.

These minor attempts that Lingodeer takes make learning relevant.

Lingodeer Overview

Some of the languages include a story at the end to understand better such as Japanese course.

The lessons are divided into units and each unit contains 2-5 lessons along with grammar lessons which they named “Learning Tips.”

From beginners to professionals, Lingodeer provides a course for everyone like Duolingo.

If you know the basics already and want to skip to a higher level, you can give a test to prove that you know the basics and jump to a higher level.

You only have a chance to make three mistakes and then you have to start all over again. Personally, I think this helps you freshen up with your basics.

Despite testing out of the section, you still would need to complete the first lesson in a unit before trying the second lesson but in reality, this is not a big deal.

Duolingo Overview

Duolingo focuses on a functional approach where it understands what people want to do with a language.

It focuses on real-life goals so that you can order your food at a restaurant when you visit a new country!

It divides the lessons on the basis of levels. Basics are taught in Level 1 and once you’re done with basics, the grammar part follows.

When I started using duolingo to learn German, after I got to know the basics, I was switched to genders.

Using Duolingo as a free application but it also offers a premium membership course which starts at $6.99/ month.

With the premium membership, you can avail a number of benefits. One of them is extra vocabulary and more grammar.

I am using Duolingo for personalized learning where it adapts your learning style. Instant grading system allows you to know instantly which answer is right and which is wrong.

There are a number of challenges offered by the application which allows you to test yourself and see how far you’ve come.

As mentioned, they have multiple choices where the question is asked, for example, “what do you call a girl?”

And multiple answers will be given along with the photographs so that you can guess and if your answer is incorrect you lose a heart.

Duolingo Language Learning App

Duolingo provides audio listening to understand the pronunciation of words. This language learning app also focuses on speaking skills which is amazing for language learners like me.

Exercises are merged together for instance, it asks you to speak a certain word and later it will ask you to type it.

So it follows a pattern for improving your listening skills by helping you hear audio and writing skills so that you know how to write certain words.

It also has a lot of grammar courses that help you understand and speak a language when you travel abroad.

I’ve completed the Japanese course with this platform and my experience was amazing.

From common phrases used in day to day life to quirky sentences and phrases, Duolingo lets you learn things that you will require.

Languages Offered

Lingodeer

Lingodeer basically focused on Asian languages in the beginning and with its excellent English courses it has outstood other applications.

Lingodeer offers the following courses taught in English – Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, and Vietnamese.

As I told you that Lingodeer basically started to focus on learning Asian languages but even when it comes to European languages, Lingodeer is still advanced.

To say it is easily reliable.

Not only does Lingodeer offers to learn English like Duolingo, but it also allows you to learn a language in a different language rather than English.

For example, you can learn Japanese course in German depending on your preferences. Isn’t this great? If you are a native speaker then Lingodeer has your back.

Duolingo

Whereas Duolingo currently offers 35 languages that you can learn and speak like French, German, Spanish and much more.

Depending on the language you want to learn, one must know about both of the applications to decide.

However, if you need to learn a different language then Duolingo is definitely a way to go.

Duolingo, on the other hand, provides you a platform to learn the language that you won’t be able to find on Lingodeer with multiple exercises to keep your interest.

However, it also offers many learning resources

Teaching Approach

Lingodeer

Lingodeer offers a language learning environment where you can learn the alphabet.

It’s so obvious that this is the basic when we learn an unknown language but to consider, Duolingo doesn’t teach you alphabets in the beginning, it directly starts by making you learn new words .

Duolingo

Duolingo focuses on a balanced approach for the learners or native speakers.

They follow the pattern of “implicit learning” and think that it is ideal for developing a strong foundational knowledge and rules of the language.

It allows learners to discover the pattern on their own and believes to teach learners the way children are taught.

When you install the application and sign up yourself, the inbuilt feature that I personally liked is that they ask you about how much time do you want to spend on the language.

Rather than forcing the time on you to complete the course. Without time allotted Duolingo offers a learning platform that is more like a game.

To keep the interest alive for the user, Duolingo teaches you a language more like a game rather than a textbook.

Learning becomes easier and fun when we are enjoying it rather than just reading through books and I enjoyed a lot when i was doing the Japanese course.

Duolingo is made to foster long term retention, methodologically proven and the curriculum is up to the mark.

Duolingo also focuses more on the picture approach to understand and guess better.

I have tried learning German on Duolingo and as soon as I started the course they directly show you MCQs where you have to select right answer by guessing through pictures.

Learning Tips and Grammar

Lingodeer

Lingodeer has a tree that is long and encourages a lot of core beginner languages.

It offers tips & important notes that can be seen in the lesson page & can be used in middle of exercises by clicking on grammatical properties provided by native speakers.

The feature that sets Lingodeer above Duolingo is that Lingoodeer has a textbook level of grammar explanations that one needs when they are learning a language.

It also provides flashcards over grammar and vocabulary. It offers crisps vocals for each of the languages.

From a number of people reviewing the application, most of their reason for keeping this over Duolingo was because of its excellent grammar.

Duolingo

Duolingo teaches grammar too but the content in the Lingodeer stands over Duolingo.

And makes it better for one to learn a language because grammar is the basic core for someone to learn a language.

Duolingo doesn’t provide tips and notes in the application, for that you will have to go to the browser website but their tips and notes seem very irrelevant.

Alongside, some of the tips are quite difficult to understand you have to read it multiple times to understand what they are actually trying to say.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of their tips. They didn’t help me.

There is a lack of grammar explanations. Their approach to teaching adults like kids does not come handy while learning grammar.

It is not easy to learn grammar without explanation. This makes it very inefficient for people who actually want to focus on their grammar.

Lessons

Lingodeer

There’s not much difference in lessons as both of the applications’ main aim is to teach you a language. Perhaps there is still a little more variety in Lingodeer than Duolingo.

It includes a lot of exercises like Matching photos to words, speaking, listening to the pronunciation, MCQs, fill in blanks, add words to correct place & writing sentences.

And Duolingo offers to listen, match the pairs, multiple-choice, fill in the blanks as well.

Duolingo

When you’re doing an exercise in Duolingo, you can click on the words and see the meaning if you need any help.

This makes it easier for people to remember quickly if they forget.

Duolingo divides lessons into 5 exercises and you keep on upgrading every time you clear up a level. As I have used the application I don’t fascinate the heart system they have.

It doesn’t seem encouraging, sometimes it becomes stressful to see you losing the heart every time I answer wrong.

There’s no proper explanation, which I found while learning a language.

Lingodeer Vs Duolingo – Pros & Cons

Now that I have explained to you about the major difference between both of them, I have shortlisted a few pros and cons from my experience of each of the applications.

Comprehensive grammatical syllabus Limited language selection compared to other platforms
Clear audio for improved pronunciation Insufficient focus on developing oral skills for real-life usage
Helpful tips and notes throughout lessons
Early focus on teaching alphabets
Strong emphasis on Asian languages
Improved course overview for better selection

Duolingo Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Wide variety of languages Limited grammar syllabus compared to Lingodeer
Free access with the option for repetition Lack of proper introductory information
Diverse exercises for speaking, listening, writing Potential mismatch between course and real-life usage
User-friendly and clear interface Absence of alphabetical teaching at the beginning
Effective use of pictures for better understanding
Ability to review and reinforce learned skills
More affordable compared to Lingodeer

I have listed the pros and cons of both of them on my personal use and they might vary according to your use and your perspective.

For me, one thing might be an advantage whereas for you it might be a disadvantage. It completely depends on your interest and what you are expecting from the application.

Room for Improvement

No application is perfect yet there is always room for improvement.  Not only in applications but in every aspect there’s room for improvement.

Both Duolingo and Lingodeer has to climb more up to reach the top.

They always look at updating the application so that users can practice without encountering problems and glitches.

Lingodeer

As mentioned above, the orders are sometimes stressful in Lingodeer for beginners.

It is because sometimes phrases of a higher level are included for beginners making it stressful for users to understand & one might think that the application isn’t suitable for them.

The constant update that language learning platform makes us feel a little bit better because even they are striving towards fulfilling our needs.

Lingodeer needs to focus more on improving oral skills because their current approach for orals skills is not that great.

For someone who is looking forward to speak the language, it is difficult for them to speak out because of lack of preparation of oral communication of language.

Duolingo

In Duolingo, they can improve by enhancing better tips and notes so that it becomes relevant. Apart from that they also need to focus on the grammar part.

A detailed and clear explanation of grammar can be very helpful for the learners who are just getting to know the language.

Sudden start into the course is a drawback for me because it becomes very disturbing for someone who is completely new to the language.

Customer Reviews

Lingodeer Customer Reviews

When I checked the ratings on the Apple store for Lingodeer it is 4.6/5 stars.

The feedbacks are more positive and appreciation for the amazing approach and course it follows.

As I said it is user friendly and enjoyable to learn.

However, the application is still not so popular and many of them are unaware of this application so it still didn’t reach the audience it is supposed to.
